Early Life and Music
Arik Ben Marshall was born in Los Angeles, California. His father was African-American and his mother was Jewish. He is the third of five children.
Marshall started his music career by playing with different musicians around Los Angeles. He became a session musician, which means he was hired to play on other artists' recordings. He played on albums for famous musicians like Tone Loc, Etta James, and Sting.
In 1988, he and his brother Lonnie Marshall started a band called Marshall Law. They were signed by Island Records but broke up after recording only a few songs. Later, his brother Lonnie formed the band Weapon of Choice. Arik Marshall continued to play music in Los Angeles and even led his own band for a short time before joining the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Time with the Red Hot Chili Peppers
In 1992, Marshall joined the Red Hot Chili Peppers after their guitarist, John Frusciante, left during a world tour. Marshall had to learn the band's songs very quickly.
He toured all over the world with the band and played at big music festivals like Lollapalooza. The band's singer, Anthony Kiedis, said Marshall was a "quick study" and always did a great job on stage. Even though he was a great performer, the band felt he wasn't the right fit for writing new songs, so he left the group in 1993.
