Aristide Guarneri (born on March 7, 1938) is an Italian former footballer. He played as a defender. At first, he was a fullback. Later, he became a centre-back. He was very good at anticipating plays and tackling. Guarneri was known as a "gentleman of the game." This is because he never received a red card in his whole career. He was a tough defender, but always played fairly.
Club Career Highlights
Guarneri started playing football in his youth with Codogno. He began his professional career with Como in 1957. He also played for other teams like Bologna and Napoli. He finished his playing career with Cremonese in 1973.
His most famous time was with Internazionale (often called Inter Milan). He played for the famous "La Grande Inter" team. This was between 1958 and 1967. During this time, he won many big titles.
With Inter, he won the European Cup twice. These wins were in 1964 and 1965. He also helped Inter win three Serie A titles. Serie A is Italy's top football league. He also won two Intercontinental Cups. These were in 1964 and 1965. The Intercontinental Cup was a match between the best teams from Europe and South America.
He almost won the Coppa Italia in the 1964–65 season. This would have given Inter a "treble". A treble means winning three major trophies in one season.
Playing for Italy
Guarneri played for the Italian national team 21 times. This was between 1963 and 1968. He scored one goal for Italy against the USSR in 1966.
His first game for Italy was on May 12, 1963. They played against Brazil, who were the World Champions at the time. Italy won that game 3–0.
He was part of Italy's team for the 1966 FIFA World Cup. He played in one game during that tournament. Later, he won the 1968 UEFA European Football Championship with Italy. This big win happened in Italy, their home country.
