The History of Oil in Arkansas
Before the Oil Boom
Before 1921, the town of Smackover was much smaller. Its main jobs were in cutting down trees (timber) and growing cotton. These industries were slowing down, meaning fewer jobs and less money for the town.
The Big Oil Discovery
Everything changed on January 10, 1921. Oil was found in a nearby town called El Dorado. This discovery made the area very exciting! Many geologists, who are scientists who study rocks and the Earth, came to look for more oil.
The search for oil soon moved north to Smackover. On July 29, 1922, something amazing happened. The "Richardson Number 1" well, located just four miles north of Smackover, struck oil! It erupted with a huge amount of new oil.
Smackover's Rapid Growth
This oil discovery changed Smackover almost overnight. The town had only about 100 people before the oil boom. But within just one year, its population exploded to over 25,000 people! Imagine how busy and exciting that must have been.
Even though Smackover wasn't the biggest oil producer, the ten counties around it still produce oil today. This shows how important natural resources have been for the region's economy for many years.
What You Can See at the Museum
Exploring the Main Exhibition Center
The museum has a huge main building, about 25,000 square feet (that's like a really big gym!). Inside, you can explore many exhibits. You'll learn all about how oil is found and used.
Working Oil Machinery and Old Town Scenes
One of the coolest parts is seeing working models of old oil machinery. You can watch how they used to drill for oil. The museum also has a re-created street scene from Smackover during its oil boom days. It's like stepping back in time to see what the town looked like when it was growing so fast!
Learning and Research Center
The museum also has a large collection and archive center, about 10,800 square feet. This is where they keep important historical items and documents. It helps people learn even more about the history of oil and brine in Arkansas.
