The Arkansas Scenic Byways Program is a special list of roads in Arkansas. These roads are chosen because they offer beautiful views and interesting places to see. Most of them are state highways. The Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department (AHTD) helps manage this program. Think of the AHTD as the state's road crew.
To become a scenic byway, a road needs to be nominated. The Arkansas General Assembly (which is like the state's law-making group) then decides if it gets the special status. For a road to be chosen, people who live near it and care about its beauty, history, and fun activities must form a group. This group includes mayors from nearby towns and county judges. They work together to show why their road is special.
Once a road is a scenic byway, it gets a unique circular sign. This sign tells you that you are driving on a special, beautiful route.
Currently, Arkansas has 11 scenic byways. Three of these are so amazing that they are also part of the National Scenic Byways program, which is a big deal across the whole country!
