History of Arlington
Arlington was first planned out in 1880 by a company called the Western Town Lot Company. It was first named Nordland, and its streets had Norwegian names.
A few years later, the city was renamed Arlington in 1885. This new name came from an old colonial town in Virginia. For a short time, it was even called Denver, but the postal service didn't approve that name. The street names were changed much later. For example, Olaf Street became Main Street, and Kanut Street became Third Street.

Most of Arlington is located in Kingsbury County.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city covers an area of about 1.72 square miles (4.45 square kilometers). All of this area is land. A lake called Lake Poinsett is located to the northeast of Arlington.
