History of Arlington
Changes in Housing Rules
For many years, some neighborhoods in the United States had unfair rules. These rules were called racial covenants. They tried to stop certain groups of people from living in specific areas. This included African-Americans, Jewish people, and other minority groups.
For example, an advertisement from the 1920s in Baltimore Sun newspaper showed these rules. It offered housing in West Arlington only to a "recommended Gentile family." This meant that only certain people were allowed to buy homes there.
The Fair Housing Act
Things changed with the Fair Housing Act of 1968. This important law made it illegal to discriminate in housing. It meant that everyone should have a fair chance to live wherever they choose. This law helped to make housing more equal for all people.
