Armenian American facts for kids

An Armenian American is a person living in the United States whose family originally came from Armenia. In 2009, over 1.2 million Americans said they had Armenian family roots.
History
The first Armenian known to come to America was called "Martin the Armenian". He arrived in the Jamestown Colony in Virginia in 1618. This was only 11 years after the colony started. Martin was asked to come to Jamestown to help raise silkworms. Silkworms are insects that make silk. Other Armenians also came but later returned to Europe.
Many Armenians started coming to the United States in the late 1800s. Even more arrived after World War I. Over 100,000 Armenian refugees came to escape terrible events in the Ottoman Empire. This event is known as the Armenian Genocide.
