Arnapkapfaaluk facts for kids
Arnapkapfaaluk ("big bad woman") was an important sea goddess for the Inuit people living near Canada's Coronation Gulf. She was like Sedna, another famous Inuit sea goddess, because she controlled the animals in the ocean. However, Arnapkapfaaluk was quite different from Sedna, as her name "big bad woman" suggests.
Unlike Sedna, Arnapkapfaaluk was not a kind or helpful goddess. Instead, she made hunters feel afraid. She did not always provide the Copper Inuit people with seals and other marine mammals they needed for food and survival. If someone broke a rule or did something wrong, Arnapkapfaaluk might prevent the hunters from finding any animals, leading to an unsuccessful hunt.
