The Arnold River is an important river located in the northern part of the Northern Territory in Australia. It flows for about 185.8 kilometers (115.5 miles). This river is part of the larger Roper River system.

Journey of the Arnold River

The Arnold River begins its journey about 30 kilometers (19 miles) northeast of the Bullwaddy Conservation Reserve. This area is north of the Carpentaria Highway.

Where the River Flows

From its start, the river flows towards a town called Minamia (Cox River). This town is located within the Alawa Aboriginal reserve. After passing Minamia, the river changes direction. It turns northwest and continues its flow.

Joining Other Waters

The Arnold River eventually joins the Hodgson River. This meeting point is about 15 kilometers (9.3 miles) south of Hodgson Downs. Along its path, the Arnold River is joined by two smaller streams. These streams are called tributaries, which means they are smaller rivers or creeks that flow into a larger river. The two tributaries that join the Arnold River are Williams Creek and Horse Creek.

River Features

As the river flows, it passes through many interesting natural features. You can find a series of lagoons and waterholes along its course. These are like natural pools of water that are part of the river system.

Why is it Called Arnold River?

The Arnold River was named after a person named Richard Aldous Arnold. He was a significant figure in the area's history.

Richard Aldous Arnold's Role

Richard Aldous Arnold was a pastoralist. This means he was someone who raised livestock, like cattle or sheep, on a large piece of land. In 1895, he bought the right to use a large area of land in this region. This land was part of a big property known as the Hodgson Downs cattle station. A cattle station is a very large farm where cattle are raised.

His Political Life

Richard Aldous Arnold was also a politician. A politician is someone who works in government and helps make decisions for the public. He sold his interest in the land in 1905. After that, he continued his political career. He became the Clerk of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly. This is a very important role in the government of New South Wales.
