Arrington is a small, quiet community located near the city of Franklin in Williamson County, Tennessee. It's known for its beautiful, rolling hills. An "unincorporated community" means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town.

How Did Arrington Begin?

The area we now call Arrington was first known as "Petersburg." In 1858, it got its own post office. At that time, the village's name was changed to Arrington. This new name came from a creek nearby.

Many early families helped build the community. Some of these families included the Buchanans, Couches, Crocketts, and Kings. Over the years, four churches were started here:

  • Bellview Cumberland Presbyterian (in 1852)
  • Hopewell A.M.E. (in 1876)
  • Patton’s Chapel A.M.E. (in 1882)
  • First Baptist (in 1968)

There were also two schools, Arrington School and Patton’s Chapel School, both located on Cox Road. The first store and post office were at the corner of Wilson Pike and Murfreesboro Road. When a railroad line came through in 1914, a train station (called a depot) was built. In the past, Arrington had two stores, a place to keep horses (a livery stable), a mill for grinding grain (a grist mill), and a shop where metal items were made (a blacksmith shop).

What is King's Chapel?

As early as 1804, preachers like Peter Cartwright, William McKendree, and Jacob Young were sharing Methodist teachings in this part of Williamson County. Their outdoor meetings led to the building of King's Chapel in 1815.

In 1849, the church members moved to a bigger building. This new church was just north of Triune. The original cornerstone from King's Chapel was moved and placed above the front door of the new building.

During the Civil War, the Union Army used the old, empty King's Chapel. Later, in the 1900s, it was even used as a barn for dairy cows!

In 2008, two families, John and Elaine Powell, and William and Patricia Anton, worked to rebuild King's Chapel. They used the original foundation stones and many of the old bricks. Today, a large neighborhood with over 420 homes is built right next to the chapel. LifePoint Church, which is based in Smyrna, Tennessee, now uses the chapel for its services.
