Playing Career
Arron Asham was chosen by the Montreal Canadiens in the 1996 NHL Entry Draft. He made his first appearance in the NHL during the 1998–99 season. After playing for parts of four seasons with Montreal, he was traded to the New York Islanders in 2002.
With the Islanders, Asham became a regular player. He had his best scoring season in 2002–03, where he scored 15 goals and made 19 assists, totaling 34 points in 78 games. After four seasons with the Islanders, Asham signed a one-year contract with the New Jersey Devils in 2007.
Joining the Flyers and Stanley Cup Finals
After the 2007–08 season, Asham became a free agent, meaning he could sign with any team. He then signed a two-year contract with the Philadelphia Flyers in 2008. Asham said he liked how the Flyers played tough hockey and felt he would fit in well with the team. He hoped to win a Stanley Cup with them.
In the 2010 playoffs, Asham scored four goals. The Flyers surprised many people by reaching the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time since 1997. One of his most important goals came in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Finals against Montreal. His goal gave the Flyers a 2–1 lead, and they eventually won the game 4–2. This win eliminated the Canadiens and sent the Flyers to the Finals to play against the Chicago Blackhawks. Asham scored one goal in the Finals, but the Flyers lost to the Blackhawks in six games.
Later Career and Unique Achievement
After the 2010 playoffs, Asham signed a one-year contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins. He played with them for two seasons. During the 2012 NHL Eastern Conference quarterfinals, Asham received a four-game suspension for his actions during a game, which was his first time being disciplined by the NHL.
In 2012, Asham signed a two-year contract with the New York Rangers. By joining the Rangers, he had played for all five teams in the Atlantic Division during his career. On February 10, 2013, Asham scored his first goal as a Ranger. This made him the only player to score a goal with every team in the Atlantic Division. On May 13, 2013, he scored the winning goal in Game 7 of the 2013 Stanley Cup playoffs. This goal helped the Rangers advance to the second round and eliminated the Washington Capitals.
Asham played only a few games with the Rangers during the 2013–14 season. He spent most of that season playing for the Hartford Wolf Pack, a team in the American Hockey League (AHL), which is a league below the NHL. The Rangers did not offer him a new contract, and he became a free agent in 2014, which marked the end of his professional hockey career.
In 2015, Asham signed an amateur contract to play for the Gander Flyers in a senior hockey league.
