Playing Career Highlights

Starting in the NHL

Arron Asham was chosen by the Montreal Canadiens in the 1996 NHL Draft. He played his first NHL game with Montreal during the 1998–99 season. After playing parts of four seasons with the Canadiens, he was traded to the New York Islanders in 2002.

Finding His Stride

With the Islanders, Asham became a regular player. He had his best scoring season in 2002–03, getting 15 goals and 19 assists for 34 points. After four seasons with the Islanders, Asham signed a one-year contract with the New Jersey Devils in 2007.

Joining the Flyers

In 2008, Asham signed a two-year contract with the Philadelphia Flyers. He said he always liked how the Flyers played. He felt he fit in with their tough style of hockey. He hoped to win a Stanley Cup with them.

Stanley Cup Finals Run

In the 2010 playoffs, Asham scored four goals. The Flyers surprised many by reaching the Stanley Cup Finals. This was their first time since 1997. Asham scored a key goal in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Finals. This goal helped the Flyers beat Montreal and move on to the Finals. The Flyers played against the Chicago Blackhawks in the Finals. Asham scored one goal, but the Flyers lost the series 4 games to 2.

Moving to Pittsburgh and New York

After the 2010 season, Asham signed a one-year contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins. This contract was later extended for another year.

During the 2012 NHL playoffs, Asham was suspended for four games. This happened after he cross-checked an opponent and threw a punch. It was his first time being disciplined by the NHL.

In 2012, Asham signed a two-year contract with the New York Rangers. By joining the Rangers, he had played for all five teams in the Atlantic Division. In 2013, he scored his first goal as a Ranger. This made him the only player to score a goal with every Atlantic Division team. On May 13, 2013, he scored the winning goal in Game 7 of the playoffs. This goal helped the Rangers advance to the next round.

End of Professional Career

Asham played only a few games with the Rangers in the 2013–14 season. He spent most of that season playing for the Hartford Wolf Pack. The Rangers did not offer him a new contract. In 2014, he became a free agent, which ended his professional hockey career. In 2015, Asham signed an amateur contract with the Gander Flyers.
