The arrondissement of Épernay is an important administrative area in France. Think of it like a district or a county in other countries. It is located in the Marne department, which is part of the Grand Est region. The main town and capital of this arrondissement is Épernay.

History

The Épernay arrondissement was created in 1800. This happened when the Marne department was first formed in France.

Geography

The Épernay arrondissement is found in the southwest part of the Marne department. It shares its borders with several other areas. To the north, it touches the Reims arrondissement. To the east, it borders the Châlons-en-Champagne arrondissement.

To the southeast and south, it is next to the Aube department. The Seine-et-Marne department is to its southwest. Finally, the Aisne department is to its west.

This arrondissement is the largest in the Marne department by land area. It covers about 2,332.7 square kilometers (which is about 900 square miles). Even though it's the biggest in size, it's the second largest in terms of how many people live there. In 2014, about 109,771 people lived in the Épernay arrondissement. This means it has a population density of about 47 people per square kilometer.

How the Arrondissement is Organized

An arrondissement is divided into smaller areas. These smaller areas are called cantons and communes.

Cantons

Cantons are like smaller voting districts. After a change in France, cantons are no longer just inside one arrondissement. This means a canton can have towns (communes) that belong to different arrondissements.

In the Épernay arrondissement, there are six cantons. Only two of these cantons have all their towns completely within the Épernay arrondissement. The cantons are:

  • Châlons-en-Champagne-3 (partly)
  • Dormans-Paysages de Champagne (partly)
  • Épernay-1 (partly)
  • Épernay-2
  • Sézanne-Brie et Champagne
  • Vertus-Plaine Champenoise (partly)

Communes

Communes are like towns or villages. The Épernay arrondissement has 181 communes in total. Here are some of the communes with the most inhabitants:
