A Look at Its History
The Bouches-du-Rhône department was created way back in 1800. The Aix-en-Provence arrondissement was one of the first parts of this new department. It has been an important area ever since.
Where is it Located?
The Aix-en-Provence arrondissement is in the northeastern part of the Bouches-du-Rhône department. It shares borders with several other areas. To the north, it touches the Vaucluse department. To the east, it borders the Var department.
To the southeast, it's next to the Marseille arrondissement. The Istres arrondissement is to its southwest. Finally, the Arles arrondissement is to its northwest.
This arrondissement is quite large! It's the second biggest district in the department. This is true both for its size, which is about 1,532.4 square kilometers (591.7 square miles), and for its population. In 2014, about 429,436 people lived here.
How it's Organized
France is divided into different administrative areas. An arrondissement is one type. Inside an arrondissement, there are smaller divisions called cantons and communes.
Understanding Cantons
Cantons are mainly used for elections in France. They are not always fully inside one arrondissement. This means a canton might include towns from different arrondissements.
The Aix-en-Provence arrondissement has 9 cantons. Five of these cantons include towns that are also part of other arrondissements.
