The Bouches-du-Rhône department was created in 1800. The arrondissement of Arles was one of the first parts of this new department.
Geography of Arles Arrondissement
The Arles arrondissement is located in the western part of the Bouches-du-Rhône department. It shares borders with several other areas. To the north, it meets the Vaucluse department. To the northeast, it borders the Aix-en-Provence arrondissement. The Istres arrondissement is to its southeast.
To the south, the Arles arrondissement touches the Mediterranean Sea. And to the west, it borders the Gard department.
This arrondissement is the largest in the Bouches-du-Rhône department by land area. It covers about 2,284.3 square kilometers (882 square miles). However, it has the fewest people living in it compared to other arrondissements in the department. In 2014, about 205,529 people lived here.
