The Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department was created a long time ago, in 1800. The Digne-les-Bains arrondissement was one of the first parts of this new department.
Geography of Digne-les-Bains Arrondissement
The Digne-les-Bains arrondissement is located in the middle of the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department. It shares borders with other areas:
- To the north, it borders the Barcelonnette arrondissement.
- To the east, it borders the Castellane arrondissement.
- To the south, it borders the Var department.
- To the west, it borders the Forcalquier arrondissement.
This arrondissement is the biggest in the department by land size. It covers about 2,465.5 square kilometers (951.9 square miles). However, it is the second largest in terms of how many people live there. In 2014, about 55,758 people lived in Digne-les-Bains. The Forcalquier arrondissement has more people.
