The Forcalquier arrondissement was created way back in 1800. It was one of the first parts of the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department when it was formed.
Where is Forcalquier?
The Forcalquier arrondissement is located in the western part of the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department. It shares borders with different areas:
- To the north, it's next to the Hautes-Alpes department.
- To the east, it borders the Digne-les-Bains arrondissement.
- To the south and west, it touches the Vaucluse department.
- To the northwest, it's next to the Drôme department.
This arrondissement is the second largest area in its department, covering about 2,111.6 square kilometers (which is about 815.3 square miles). Even though it's not the biggest in size, it has the most people living in it, with about 88,333 inhabitants recorded in 2014.
