History of Haguenau-Wissembourg
The Haguenau-Wissembourg arrondissement was created on January 1, 2015. It was formed by joining two older arrondissements: Haguenau and Wissembourg. Some towns from the Strasbourg-Campagne and Saverne arrondissements were also added. This change helped to group areas together more efficiently.
Geography of Haguenau-Wissembourg
The Haguenau-Wissembourg arrondissement is located in the northeast part of the Bas-Rhin department. It shares borders with Germany to the north and east. To the south, it borders the Strasbourg arrondissement. The Saverne arrondissement is to its southwest. Finally, the Moselle department is to its west.
This arrondissement covers an area of about 1,421.9 square kilometers (549.0 sq mi). It is the largest of the five arrondissements in the Bas-Rhin department. However, it is the second largest in terms of population. In 2014, about 240,402 people lived there. This means it has a population density of about 169 inhabitants per square kilometer.
