The Indre department was created in the year 1800. At that time, the area we now call the arrondissement of La Châtre was actually part of another district called Châteauroux. Later, it became its own separate arrondissement.
Geography of La Châtre Arrondissement
The arrondissement of La Châtre is located in the southeast part of the Indre department. It covers an area of about 1,323.2 square kilometers (511 square miles). About 32,962 people live here.
The lowest point in this area is 104 meters (341 feet) high. You can find it in a small town called Ceaulmont. The highest point is much taller, at 467 meters (1,532 feet) high. This high point is in the town of Crevant.
The arrondissement of La Châtre shares its borders with other areas. To the north, it's next to the Châteauroux arrondissement. To the northeast, you'll find the Issoudun arrondissement. The Cher department is to the east, and the Creuse department is to the south. Finally, to the west, it borders the Le Blanc arrondissement.
