The arrondissement of Sélestat-Erstein is a special kind of administrative area in France. Think of it like a large district or region within a bigger area called a department. This arrondissement is located in the Bas-Rhin department, which is part of the Grand Est region in France. Its main city, or capital, is Sélestat.
How it Started
The Bas-Rhin department was created in 1800. The area that is now the Sélestat-Erstein arrondissement was part of this new department right from the start. In 1806, the main office for the area, called a subprefecture, moved to the city of Sélestat.
Later, in 1974, two smaller arrondissements, Sélestat and Erstein, were joined together. This created the single, larger arrondissement we know today as Sélestat-Erstein.
Where it Is
The Sélestat-Erstein arrondissement is the most southern part of the Bas-Rhin department. It shares its borders with several other places.
- To the west and north, it borders the Molsheim arrondissement.
- To the northeast, it is next to the Strasbourg arrondissement.
- To the east, it borders Germany.
- To the south, it touches the Haut-Rhin department.
- To the southwest, it borders the Vosges department.
This arrondissement covers an area of about 980.5 square kilometers (378.6 square miles). In 2013, it had a population of 155,916 people. This means there were about 159 people living in each square kilometer.
