The arrondissement of Sélestat-Erstein is a special kind of administrative area in France. Think of it like a large district or region within a bigger area called a department. This arrondissement is located in the Bas-Rhin department, which is part of the Grand Est region in France. Its main city, or capital, is Sélestat.

How it Started

The Bas-Rhin department was created in 1800. The area that is now the Sélestat-Erstein arrondissement was part of this new department right from the start. In 1806, the main office for the area, called a subprefecture, moved to the city of Sélestat.

Later, in 1974, two smaller arrondissements, Sélestat and Erstein, were joined together. This created the single, larger arrondissement we know today as Sélestat-Erstein.
