Arroyo City is a small, unincorporated community in Cameron County, Texas, United States. An unincorporated community means it's a group of homes and businesses that isn't officially a city with its own local government. In 2017, about 510 people lived here. Arroyo City is located within the beautiful Rio Grande Valley area. It is also part of the larger Brownsville-Harlingen metropolitan area.

A Look Back in Time

The first people to settle in the Arroyo City area were Mexican herders. This happened way back in the 1860s. They gave the place its name because it is located along the Arroyo Colorado, which is a type of waterway.

A post office opened in Arroyo City in 1887. This helped people send and receive mail easily. However, the post office later closed its doors in 1907. By 1910, the community was quite small. It had only about 10 people living there and two stores.

Over the years, Arroyo City remained a quiet place. In the 1930s, you could still find scattered houses around the area. By the 1970s, some businesses and homes were still active. Arroyo City was even important enough to be marked on Texas state highway maps in 1990. The community's population was last reported as 510 people in 2017.
