Arsène Lupin facts for kids
Arsène Lupin is a famous fictional character from a series of crime fiction novels. He was created by the French writer Maurice Leblanc. Lupin also appears in many sequels, movies, TV shows, plays, and comic books.
He first appeared in July 1905 in a story called L'Arrestation d'Arsène Lupin, which means Arsène Lupin arrested. This clever thief became very well-known. Police officers were often frustrated because he always seemed to get away, even from jail! But many citizens admired him and loved reading newspaper articles about his amazing adventures. Lupin is shown as someone who loves his country, is romantic, very brave, and always respectful to women.
Who is Arsène Lupin?
Arsène Lupin was born in 1874. His father was a gymnastics teacher who taught him boxing and fencing. These skills later became very useful for Lupin's adventures. He was raised by a nanny named Victoire, and they stayed close throughout his life.
When he was young, his parents separated. His mother then worked for a rather arrogant relative. Lupin, being very clever, once took a necklace from this relative's house. By the time he was eighteen, he had learned many things, including law, medicine, acting, and martial arts. His exciting journey as a gentleman thief began when he was eighteen years old.
A Master of Disguise
Besides his real name, Lupin loves to use many fake names, like Sernine and Perenna. He pretends to have different jobs, from being a famous traveler to a retired general. Sometimes, he even disguises himself as a detective. In these roles, he solves many mysterious cases and becomes quite famous. He often uses the identity of someone who has recently passed away, making it harder for anyone to track him.
The Creator of Lupin
The end of Arsène Lupin's story is not fully known. This is because his creator, Maurice Leblanc, passed away in 1941. He died before he could finish Le Dernier Amour d'Arsène Lupin (English: The Last Love of Arsene Lupin), which would have been the 21st book in the series.
Maurice Leblanc received a special award called the French Legion of Honour. He got this award because his Lupin stories helped inspire a sense of pride and patriotism in the French people. Leblanc bought a house in Etretat and named it Le Clos Lupin. This house is still a popular place for tourists to visit today.
