Arsenio Linares y Pombo (born October 22, 1848 – died August 7, 1914) was an important Spanish military officer and government official. He was born in Valencia, Spain. Linares served his country for many years, starting as a lieutenant in 1868. He was known for being very loyal to the King of Spain, Alfonso XIII.

Early Life and Military Career

Arsenio Linares began his military journey in 1868. He took part in battles against rebellions in Cuba. He also fought in the Carlist Wars in mainland Spain, helping to stop uprisings.

Linares held different military jobs in various places. He worked in the Philippines, Madrid, and Melilla before returning to Cuba. He was a dedicated soldier who believed strongly in supporting the Spanish monarchy.

The Spanish-American War

During the Spanish–American War, Linares played a key role in defending Santiago de Cuba. This city was very important, and he was in charge of its defense during the Battle of San Juan Hill.

However, Linares made a decision that affected the battle. He chose to keep nearly 10,000 Spanish reserve soldiers inside the city of Santiago instead of sending them to help defend the San Juan Height. The Spanish defenses on the hill were also not built very well. Instead of being placed where soldiers could see clearly down the hill, they were on the very top. This meant American soldiers could get closer without being seen easily.

After the Battle of San Juan Hill, Linares wrote to his commander, saying that the situation was very bad and that surrendering was unavoidable. He felt that continuing to fight would be pointless.

A Leader in Government

In 1900, Arsenio Linares became the Minister of War. This meant he was in charge of the country's army. He held this important job under several different governments. In the same year, he was also made a senator for life, which meant he would be a member of the Spanish parliament for the rest of his life.

In 1909, Linares ordered troops from Catalonia to be sent to Morocco. This decision led to a series of protests and riots in Barcelona, known as the Tragic Week.

Arsenio Linares y Pombo died in Madrid in 1914 at the age of 65.
