Artés is a cool town in Catalonia, a region in Spain. It's located in the province of Barcelona, within an area called Bages. About 5,648 people live here.

Where is Artés?

Artés is right in the middle of Catalonia. It sits on the eastern edge of a flat area known as Pla de Bages. The town is located near the Gavarresa river and its smaller stream, the Malrubí.

It shares borders with other towns like Sallent and Avinyó to the north. To the south, it borders Calders. A small part of Artés also touches Navarcles in the west, near the Llobregat river.

You can find a special rock formation nearby called the Artés Formation. It's named after the town because it's so close!

A Look Back in Time: Artés's History

The name Artés probably comes from the old Latin word Artium. This word means "fortified hill." This makes sense because there was a strong church on a hill in the 6th century. The first people in Artés started building their village around this church.

We don't know much about the very first people in Artés from Prehistory. But a paper from the year 938 mentions three dolmens. These are ancient stone structures. Also, many pieces of Iberian pottery have been found in the Salabernada valley.

There are lots of clues from the Roman times in Artés. These clues show that people lived here for about 700 years! For example, at a place called Matacans, there used to be a Roman villa. This was like a big country house.

In the Plaça Vella (which means Old Square), people found three Roman inscriptions from the 2nd and 3rd centuries. They also found an old burial ground called a necropolis. Plus, there was an ancient Christian church from the 6th or 7th century.

Artés is one of the oldest towns in the Bages area to be written about. On June 24, 889, a king named Odó gave some land and rights to a church. This included the Valley of Artés. This shows how important Artés was, even way back then!

What Artés Does: Economy

Today, the main activity in Artés is industry. This means there are factories and businesses. Some big international companies have their offices or factories here.

In 1973, an industrial area called Santa Maria d'Artés was opened. It was made much bigger in 1991. This area is now almost full of businesses.

The Rossignol Skis Group makes skis in Artés. They produce Rossignol and Dynastar skis for alpine skiing. They also make Rossignol skis for nordic skiing.

Artés is also famous for making wine and cava. Cava is a type of sparkling wine. In 1996, Artés and other nearby towns got a special award. Their wines were given the Denomination of Origin Pla de Bages. This means their wines are recognized as being from a specific, high-quality region. At the same time, they celebrated 10 years of making Cava of Artés!
