Artemis Fowl and the Atlantis Complex is the seventh exciting book in the popular Artemis Fowl series. It was written by Eoin Colfer. The book was first released on July 20, 2010, in the United Kingdom. In this adventure, the super-smart young genius Artemis Fowl faces a new challenge: a strange fairy illness that affects his mind.

The Story Begins

The story starts on a huge glacier in Iceland called Vatnajökull. Here, Artemis shows off his newest invention, the "Ice Cube." This device is designed to help stop global warming. It works by shooting tiny reflective pieces into clouds. These pieces would then fall with snow, reflecting sunlight and protecting icebergs.

Captain Holly Short, Foaly the centaur, and Wing Commander Vinyáya are there to see it. As Artemis explains his invention, his speech becomes slow. Holly and Foaly realize he might have something called Atlantis Complex. This is a fairy disease that can cause problems like being overly neat (OCD), feeling very suspicious (paranoia), and even having different personalities.

Unexpected Attack

While outside, Artemis's scans pick up an unknown flying object (UFO). Foaly confirms the scans. Suddenly, Artemis acts strangely, accusing Foaly of trying to steal his invention. Holly tries to calm him down using a fairy trick called mesmerism.

But then, a mysterious spacecraft attacks them! Foaly had actually designed this craft to search for life on Mars. The ship crashes, hitting a shuttle. This instantly kills Commander Vinyáya and all the fairy police backup. Holly, Foaly, and Artemis are left stuck on the glacier without any way to communicate or defend themselves.

Butler's Mission

Meanwhile, Artemis's bodyguard, Butler, is in Mexico. Artemis, being paranoid because of his illness, tricked Butler into going to Cancún. He told Butler that his sister, Juliet, was in danger. Juliet is now a wrestler known as "Jade Princess."

Butler and Juliet manage to escape from a large group of zombie-like wrestling fans. These fans were being controlled by someone else's mesmerism.

A New Enemy

Turnball Root, who is the brother of the late Julius Root, hires a group of dwarfs. Their mission is to capture Butler and Juliet. However, the clever dwarf Mulch Diggums stops them.

Mulch, Butler, and Juliet then work together. They rescue Artemis, Holly, and Foaly. All six of them begin to chase after Turnball.

The Confrontation

Turnball eventually catches them. He places a magical curse on Holly and Artemis, making them his slaves. Turnball's goal is to kidnap No. 1, a young demon. He wants No. 1 to reverse his wife's aging.

However, Artemis has an alter ego, or different personality, named Orion. Orion is not affected by the curse. He manages to save No. 1 and Holly. Turnball has set up a shuttle to explode. His wife, Leonor, decides she doesn't want to be young again. She only wishes to fly one last time. She and Turnball Root ride deep into the ocean in the shuttle, which then explodes.

Aftermath

After the adventure, Artemis returns to his usual self, though still with his obsessive-compulsive traits. He is taken on a transport shuttle to the Argon clinic for therapy.

At the underwater hospital where Turnball almost defeated the group, Juliet is having a wrestling match. She is fighting a large pixie guard and is pretending to lose. Artemis and Foaly are teasing Holly about a recent date she had. Butler calls Angeline Fowl, Artemis's mother. He tells her that Artemis has a fairy disease similar to OCD. Angeline is very worried and upset, but Butler helps her feel better. He then walks into the gym, knowing Juliet is just pretending to struggle in her wrestling match.

Next Adventure

This book is the second-to-last in the Artemis Fowl series. The eighth and final book, The Last Guardian, was released in 2012.
