A Look Back in Time
How Arthur Got Its Name
Back in 1881, about fifty people lived in a place called Pole Canyon. This community eventually became known as Arthur. There are two interesting stories about how it got its name.
One story says the post office was named after Chester Arthur. He was the President of the United States at that time. The other story suggests the town was named after its very first postmaster, Arthur Gedne.
The Post Office Years
The post office in Arthur was open for many years. It first operated from April 1881 until May 1887. Then, it reopened in September 1889 and stayed open until June 1951.
Ranching Life
For a long time, ranching was the most important way people made a living in Arthur. Many ranches stayed in the same family for generations. This means families passed their ranches down from parents to children for a very long time.
Even today, some ranches are still active in and around Arthur. You can also see many buildings from the 1800s that are still being used. They are a cool reminder of the town's history.
