Major General Arthur Thomas Moore (born September 20, 1830 – died April 25, 1913) was a brave soldier from Ireland. He became a high-ranking officer in the Bombay Army, which was part of the British Indian Army. He is famous for receiving the Victoria Cross, the highest award a soldier can get for incredible bravery in battle.
A Hero's Story
Arthur Thomas Moore was born in Carlingford, County Louth, a town in Ireland. He went to a special college to train as a soldier.
The Persian War
When he was 26 years old, Moore was a lieutenant (a junior officer) in the 3rd Bombay Light Cavalry. This was during the Anglo-Persian War in 1857. He and another soldier, John Grant Malcolmson, did something incredibly brave that earned them the Victoria Cross.
Battle of Khushab
On February 8, 1857, during the Battle of Khushab in Persia, Lieutenant Moore showed amazing courage. He was leading the attack. His horse jumped into an enemy group but sadly fell dead, trapping Moore and breaking his sword. He was in great danger!
Luckily, Lieutenant Malcolmson bravely fought his way through the enemy to reach Moore. He helped his friend escape to safety. During this same battle, Lieutenant Moore also led his regiment in a charge against 500 Persian soldiers. He even jumped his horse over their bayonets (the knives on the end of their rifles)!
Later Life
Arthur Thomas Moore continued his military career and eventually became a major general, which is a very high rank in the army. He passed away in Dublin, Ireland, on April 25, 1913, and is buried in Mount Jerome Cemetery.
