What Was the Battle of Khushab?
The Battle of Khushab was an important event in the Anglo-Persian War. This war was fought between the British (along with their allies from the East India Company) and Persia. The battle took place when the British army was moving back to the city of Bushehr. The Persian army surprised them, leading to a big fight.
Why Did the Anglo-Persian War Happen?
The Anglo-Persian War (1856-1857) was a conflict mainly about control over the city of Herat in Afghanistan. Both Britain and Persia wanted influence in the region. Persia tried to take Herat, which Britain saw as a threat to its interests in India. This led to Britain declaring war on Persia.
Who Fought in the Battle?
The British forces were led by Sir James Outram. His army included about 4,600 soldiers from Britain and India. The Persian army was led by Khanlar Mirza and had around 8,000 soldiers. The battle was a clash between these two forces.
The Battle Unfolds
Before the battle, the British army had taken the town of Borazjan without a fight. They were then heading back towards Bushehr. As they were leaving, the Persian army, which was smaller but ready for battle, ambushed them from behind. The Persian forces had set themselves up in a battle formation.
A Brave Cavalry Charge
A very important part of the battle was a charge by the 3rd Bombay Light Cavalry. This cavalry unit is now part of a famous Indian army group called The Poona Horse. They bravely charged into a group of Persian soldiers from the 1st Khusgai Regiment of Fars. These Persian soldiers were formed into a strong defensive square.
During this charge, two soldiers earned the highest award for bravery, the Victoria Cross.
- Lieutenant Arthur Thomas Moore was the first to break into the Persian square.
- Captain John Grant Malcolmson then helped Lieutenant Moore get out safely.
Out of about 500 Persian soldiers in that square, only 20 managed to escape.
What Happened After?
After fighting off the Persian ambush, the British forces continued their journey. They successfully made their way back to Bushehr. The Battle of Khushab showed the strength of the British and Indian forces in the region.
