Life of Khanlar Mirza
Early Events of the War
In 1856, Persian forces took back the city of Herat. This led Britain to declare war on Persia on November 1, 1856. The conflict is known as the Anglo-Persian War.
Soon after, on November 10, a British-Indian naval group was sent to the Persian Gulf. They sailed through the Strait of Hormuz. This group heavily attacked several Persian cities. These included Bushehr, Ahwaz, and Mohammerah (now Khorramshahr).
Battles and Retreats
A British army force, led by Major General Sir James Outram, 1st Baronet, moved from Bushehr. They advanced towards Boorzgoon. There, they defeated Khanlar Mirza's forces. The British then took control of Bushehr and Lengeh port cities. They also captured Boorzgoon, Khorramshahr, Khark Island, and Ahwaz.
The capture of Boorzgoon meant that Persian supplies were destroyed. Khanlar Mirza's army was attacked again at Kooshab on February 7, 1857. They suffered a major defeat.
After returning to Bushehr, General Outram left Major-General Stalker in charge of the town. Outram's forces then crossed the Persian Gulf. They moved up the Euphrates river to Mohammerah, about sixty miles inland.
Mohammerah and the End of the War
On March 26, the British Navy attacked strong Persian positions and forts in Mohammerah. When 500 British troops landed, they met little resistance. They captured a large amount of supplies.
Prince Khanlar Mirza and his forces retreated to Shuster. The Anglo-Persian War officially ended on March 4, 1857. This happened after the Paris Agreement was signed between the two countries. France helped to arrange this peace agreement. As a result, British forces left the port city.
Khanlar Mirza passed away in 1862. At that time, he was serving as the governor of Isfahan.
