Arthur Vickers (born February 2, 1882 – died July 27, 1944) was a brave English soldier. He received the Victoria Cross, which is the highest award for bravery in the face of the enemy. This medal is given to soldiers from the United Kingdom and Commonwealth countries. He also earned the French Croix de Guerre for his courage.

A Hero in World War I

Arthur Vickers was 33 years old during the First World War. He was a private in the 2nd Battalion of The Royal Warwickshire Regiment. His amazing act of bravery happened on September 25, 1915, in a place called Hulluch, France.

Vickers' Brave Action

During a battle, his army unit was trying to attack German trenches. They were stopped by strong wire fences. These wires were a big problem for his battalion. Private Vickers decided to act on his own. He moved forward, even though there was heavy gunfire and explosions all around him.

He stood up in broad daylight to cut the wires. This was incredibly dangerous. His brave action helped his unit move forward. It played a big part in the success of their attack.

Receiving His Award

For his incredible bravery, Arthur Vickers was awarded the Victoria Cross. He received this special medal from King George V himself. The ceremony took place at Buckingham Palace in 1916.

Life After the War

Arthur Vickers continued to serve in the army. He later became a sergeant, which is a higher rank. He served his country until 1935.

He passed away in Birmingham in 1944. He is buried at Witton Cemetery in the city.
