Arturo Cavero Velásquez (born November 29, 1940 – died October 9, 2009) was a very famous Peruvian singer. Most people knew him by his nickname, "Zambo Cavero". He was an important symbol of Afro-Peruvian culture and identity through his music.

Arturo Cavero was born in Lima, Peru. His father, Juan Cavero, was from Huaral, and his mother, Digna Velásquez, was from Cañete.

His Unique Singing Style

Zambo Cavero had a special way of singing that truly captured people's hearts. His powerful voice and feelings made Peruvian creole music come alive. He was especially good at singing traditional Peruvian waltzes.

Many of his best songs were written by famous Peruvian composers like Augusto Polo Campos and Félix Pasache. He also performed many traditional Peruvian creole songs, which have strong influences from Afro-Peruvian culture.

Honors and Legacy

On June 3, 1987, Zambo Cavero received a special honor in Washington, D.C. The Organization of American States recognized him alongside other important Peruvian musicians, including the talented guitar player Óscar Avilés. This showed how much his music meant to the Americas.

Arturo Cavero passed away on October 9, 2009, in Lima, Peru, due to a serious illness. After his death, the Peruvian President at the time, Alan García, declared a day of national mourning. This meant the whole country paused to remember and honor him.
