Artūras Paulauskas, born on August 23, 1953, in Vilnius, is a well-known politician from Lithuania. He served as the Speaker of the Seimas, which is like Lithuania's parliament, from 2000 to 2006. He also briefly held the role of Acting President of Lithuania in 2004.

Early Life and Education

Artūras Paulauskas studied law at Vilnius University. He finished his degree in 1976. After graduating, he started his career working as an investigator. He also worked as a prosecutor.

Legal Career

Paulauskas held important legal positions. From 1987 to 1990, he was the Deputy Prosecutor General of Lithuania. He then became the Prosecutor General of Lithuania, serving from 1990 to 1995. He returned to the Deputy Prosecutor General role from 1995 to 1997. Before entering politics, he worked in private law from 1997 to 2000.

Political Journey

Artūras Paulauskas began his political career by running for President of Lithuania. This was during the 1997–1998 elections. The outgoing President, Algirdas Brazauskas, supported him. Paulauskas almost won, but he lost to Valdas Adamkus by a very small difference.

Founding a New Party

After the election, Paulauskas started a new political party. It was called The New Union (Social Liberals). He became the leader of this party on April 25, 1998. In the 2000 Lithuanian parliamentary election, his party did very well. They received almost 20% of the votes.

Speaker of the Seimas

Following the 2000 election, Artūras Paulauskas became the Speaker of the Seimas. This is a very important position in Lithuania's parliament. He started this role on October 19, 2000. He served as Speaker for several years.

Acting President of Lithuania

In 2004, the President at the time, Rolandas Paksas, was removed from office. Because of this, Artūras Paulauskas stepped in as the Acting President of Lithuania. He held this important role from April 6, 2004, until July 12, 2004. New elections were held, and Valdas Adamkus became the new president.

Later Political Roles

On April 11, 2006, Paulauskas was removed from his position as Speaker. Most of the parliament members voted for this change. Later, in 2008, he was chosen to be the Minister of Environment. As Minister, he spoke about the importance of using renewable energy in Lithuania. This was at a United Nations meeting in May 2008.

Recent News

In 2015, news reports mentioned that Artūras Paulauskas was on a list of people who could not enter Russia. This list included many important people from the European Union. Also in 2015, Paulauskas suggested that Lithuania should ban burkas.
