Arundhati Devi (born Guha Thakurata) was a very talented Indian artist. She was an actress, director, writer, and singer. She is mostly known for her amazing work in Bengali films.
Arundhati Devi was born in 1924 and passed away in 1990. She studied at Visva-Bharati University. There, she learned Rabindra Sangeet, a special type of music, from Sailajaranjan Majumdar.
Early Career and Music
Arundhati Devi started her career in 1940. She began as a Rabindra Sangeet singer. She sang on All India Radio, which was a big radio station.
Acting Career
Arundhati Devi started acting in films in 1952. Her first film was Mahaprasthaner Pathe. This Bengali film also had a Hindi version called Yatrik.
She worked with many famous directors. Some of her films include Nabajanma (1956) and Chalachal (1956). She also starred in Panchatapa (1957).
She worked with Prabhat Mukhopadhyay on films like Maa (1956) and Bicharak (1959). She also worked with Tapan Sinha on Kalamati (1958) and Jatugriha (1964).
Awards for Acting
In 1963, Arundhati Devi won an important award. She received the Bengal Film Journalists' Association – Best Actress Award. This was for her role in the film Bhagini Nivedita (1962). This film also won a National Award.
Directing Films
Arundhati Devi also became a film director. Her first film as a director was Chutti. This film was very successful.
In 1967, she won a National Film Award. This award was for Best Film Based On High Literary Work. She received it at the 14th National Film Awards.
Personal Life
Arundhati Devi was born in Barisal. This area was part of British India at the time. Today, Barisal is in Bangladesh.
In 1957, she married film director Tapan Sinha. They met at the Berlin International Film Festival. Their son is a scientist named Anindya Sinha. Arundhati Devi passed away on January 1, 1990.
