History of Arándiga
What is the ancient name of Arándiga?
Arándiga might have been an ancient settlement called Aratikos or Aratis. This old town was part of the Iberian culture. Not much is known about it, but it was located southwest of a Roman city called Caesaraugusta. Today, Caesaraugusta is known as Zaragoza.
What do we know about ancient Aratikos?
In the late 2nd century BC, Aratikos made its own coins. These coins had a picture of a man's head on one side. On the other side, they showed a horseman carrying a spear. The name aratikos was written on these coins in the Iberian language.
How do we know Arándiga is Aratikos?
Experts who study ancient maps and places, like those who created the Barrington Atlas of the Ancient World, believe that modern-day Arándiga is the same place as the ancient Aratikos. This helps us connect the past to the present!
