As Aventuras de Poliana is a popular Brazilian telenovela. It was written by Íris Abravanel. The story is based on the famous 1913 book Pollyanna by Eleanor H. Porter.

Sophia Valverde plays the main character, Poliana. The show first aired on SBT on May 16, 2018. Later, on October 2, 2019, SBT announced a second season. This new season would be based on the 1915 book Pollyanna Grows Up.

The telenovela is about a girl named Poliana. She loses her parents and goes to live with her aunt, Luísa, in São Paulo. The story also includes secrets about Mr. Pendleton. There are funny mix-ups from the MaGaBeLo club. Plus, it tells the story of João. He is a boy who travels alone from Ceará to São Paulo. He hopes to find new adventures after meeting Poliana by chance.

What the Story is About

Poliana is an 11-year-old girl who is always positive. Her parents, Lorenzo and Alice, were talented artists. They had a traveling theater group called Vagalume Troupe. Even though they were happy, they often had money problems.

To stay positive, Poliana's parents taught her a special game. It's called the "glad game." This game helps you find the good side of any situation. Even when things are tough, you try to find something to be glad about.

The troupe performed in a quiet village in Ceará. There, Poliana met João. He was a humble boy who loved music. João lived in a small shack with his father, Tião, and his mother, Josefa. João had to stop school early to help his father on the farm. But he loved music, and his mother saw his talent.

Poliana's mother passed away, and her father became ill. Poliana had to move to São Paulo. She went to live with her mother's family, the D'Avila family. Her father told her to never give up on her dreams. He also reminded her to always play the glad game.

João got tired of his father's strict rules. He decided to leave home. He promised his mother he would come back to give her a better life. Josefa was surprised but knew he might achieve his dreams this way. So, João started his own adventure to São Paulo. He rode on the back of a truck.

Poliana and João arrived in São Paulo at the same time. They faced many new adventures. These adventures changed their lives and dreams. Poliana learned that not everyone is as kind as her parents. She found that the glad game was harder to play. João had to deal with dangers on the streets. He fought for his dreams and to keep his promise to Josefa.

During their adventures, Poliana and João met again. Fate brought them together, and they became friends once more. Poliana lived with her aunt Luisa D'Avila. Luisa was her mother Alice's sister. But Luisa was cold and didn't seem happy Poliana was there. Poliana had to follow many rules. Luisa also lied about other family members. She said her brother lived in China, so Poliana couldn't contact him. Nanci and Antonio, who worked at the mansion, helped Poliana feel less lonely.

Poliana explored her new neighborhood. She met Mr. Pendleton, a serious man with a dog. He lived in a big mansion nearby. The boys from the MaGaBeLo Club were always trying to figure out his secrets. Poliana also visited the "Ora Pães, Pães" bakery. It was a cozy place run by Durval. Poliana didn't know that Durval was her uncle. He was the brother Luisa said was in China. Durval had two daughters, Raquel and Lorena. They were Poliana's cousins, but she didn't know them yet.

Throughout the story, Poliana faced many challenges. These included school, friendships, and her own family. She felt she needed to help João find a home. She also wanted to reunite her aunt and uncle. And she hoped to solve the mystery of Luisa's past love. This way, Luisa might find happiness again. Even with all the difficulties, Poliana always tried to see the good side of life. She spread the message of the glad game everywhere she went.

How the Show Was Made

Work on the telenovela started in late 2016. It was first going to be called As Aventuras de Pollyanna e João Feijão. The creators wanted the main character, Poliana, to be about 11 years old. This was to match the original book.

The cast members were introduced on September 6, 2017. Filming began in Fortaleza on September 26, 2017. The first season was planned to have many episodes. It would be shown over two to three years. On October 2, 2019, it was announced that a second season would be made. Filming for the first season finished on December 21, 2019. The actors then took a break.

On March 17, 2020, filming for the second season stopped. This was because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Filming had only just started a week before. Because of this stop, the second season was delayed until 2021.

Choosing the Actors

In late 2016, Larissa Manoela was first chosen to play Poliana. But the directors decided to give her a different role. This was because the book's character was 11 years old. Larissa Manoela was 16 at the time. She looked older than the character. Changing the character's age would change the whole story. So, Sophia Valverde was chosen to play Poliana.

In January 2017, they started looking for other actors. Mel Lisboa was asked to play Luisa. But she couldn't because of her theater work. So, Milena Toscano was cast as Luisa. She had turned down another role before to be in a different show. Igor Rickli was asked to play Afonso. But he chose to stay with another TV channel. So, Victor Pecoraro got the role instead.

Milena Toscano's Pregnancy

In March 2018, Milena Toscano found out she was going to have a baby. She had to leave the show. Her character, Luisa, was very important to the story. The director first planned to film many scenes with her. They thought they could explain Luisa's absence as a business trip. But Milena decided she would not return to filming after her baby was born. So, she officially left the telenovela. On May 19, 2018, it was announced that Thaís Melchior would take over the role of Luisa.
