Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Asclepigenia (born around 430 AD, died 485 AD) was an important Athenian philosopher and a mystic. She lived in ancient Greece and was known for her deep understanding of philosophy and spiritual practices.

Biography

Asclepigenia was the daughter of Plutarch of Athens, who was also a famous philosopher. She studied and taught at the Neoplatonic school in Athens. This school focused on the ideas of ancient Greek thinkers like Plato and Aristotle. It was different from other schools, like one in Alexandria, which focused more on science.

Asclepigenia lived during a time when old Greek ideas were clashing with the new Christian religion, which was becoming very popular. Her father, Plutarch, tried to combine the teachings of Aristotle and Plato. He also taught her about something called theurgy, which was a type of spiritual practice or divine magic. He had learned this from his own father, Nestorius.

After her father Plutarch passed away, Asclepigenia took over the school. She was a respected philosopher and became a teacher to many students. Her most famous student was Proclus. She taught him not only the philosophies of Aristotle and Plato, but also the special spiritual practices and theurgy her father had shared only with her.

Asclepigenia was an expert in theurgy. She believed there were five main parts to reality: the One, Nature, Matter, Soul, and Intelligence. She thought that everyone had a divine, or god-like, part inside them. She taught that people could find true happiness and control their own lives by connecting with a higher power, using spiritual practices, and meditating. Her teachings on theurgy greatly helped Proclus. It is said that Proclus even used these practices to help cure his friend's daughter.

Asclepigenia continued to teach at the Academy even after Proclus became famous for his own ideas. She was especially known for her skills in theurgy and her deep understanding of Platonic philosophy. She shared the teachings of Aristotle and Plato with many students. Asclepigenia was a highly respected female teacher and philosopher in the Greek world. She helped develop Neoplatonic ideas and worked with many other great thinkers, including her brother Hierius. Her work influenced future ideas about theurgy and ancient spiritual practices. She is believed to have died in 485 AD.
