Ash Creek (Connecticut) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Ash Creek is a special waterway located in Fairfield County, Connecticut. It forms a natural border between the city of Bridgeport and the town of Fairfield. This important creek is the last saltwater estuary in the area. It connects to Long Island Sound and extends inland along the Rooster River. An estuary is a place where fresh river water mixes with salty ocean water.

The Story of Ash Creek

Ash Creek has a long and interesting history. On old maps from the colonial times, this area was known as the Uncoway or Fairfield River. Since the town of Fairfield was founded in 1639, Ash Creek has been its main harbor, a busy place where ships could dock.

How Ash Creek Got Its Name

The name "Ash Creek" was given to this body of water after a major event during the American Revolutionary War. In 1779, British soldiers burned Fairfield Center to the ground. Because of the way the wind was blowing that day, most of the ashes from the fires landed right in the creek. That's how it became known as "Ash Creek."
