Ash Flat's History
Ash Flat was started in 1856. The town got its name from a group of ash trees that grew nearby.
In 1967, the government of Arkansas decided that Ash Flat would be the only "county seat" for Sharp County. A county seat is like the main town where the county government offices are located. Before this, two other towns, Hardy and Evening Shade, shared this title.
