Life and Education
Ashesh Prosad Mitra was born in Kolkata, West Bengal, India, on February 21, 1927. He went to Bangabasi College and later studied at the University of Calcutta. He completed his advanced studies at the famous Rajabazar Science College, which is part of the same university.
Dr. Mitra held very important positions in Indian science. From 1982 to 1986, he was the director of the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) in Delhi. This lab focuses on physics research. After that, from 1986 to 1991, he became the Director General of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). The CSIR is a big organization that supports scientific and industrial research across India.
He passed away in New Delhi on September 3, 2007.

He studied how solar flares affect the ionosphere and developed new ways to understand the atmosphere.
- He was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1987. This is a very high civilian award given by the Indian government.
- In 1988, he became a Fellow of the Royal Society of London. This is a very old and respected scientific academy in the United Kingdom.
- He was the President of the International Union of Radio Sciences (URSI) from 1984 to 1987. This shows his leadership in global scientific communities.
