Ashleigh is a beautiful historic house located in Fauquier County, Virginia. It was built in 1840 and is known for its Greek Revival style. This means it looks a bit like ancient Greek temples, with grand columns and balanced designs.

Ashleigh sits near the town of Delaplane, Virginia. It was built on land that was once part of the large Oak Hill estate. This estate belonged to the famous American statesman, John Marshall.

What is Ashleigh?

Ashleigh is a one-story house that was built in 1840. It was designed in the popular Greek Revival style. This style was common in the United States during the 1800s. It often features tall columns and a grand, balanced look.

The house is quite large, covering about 100 acres of land. It has been a private home for many years.

Who Lived at Ashleigh?

Ashleigh was built for Margaret Marshall. She was the granddaughter of John Marshall, a very important figure in American history. John Marshall was a Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court.

Margaret Marshall herself designed the house. A builder named Sutton helped bring her plans to life. In 1845, Margaret married John Thomas Smith. They lived at Ashleigh for about 15 years.

Changes Over Time

In 1860, Margaret and John sold Ashleigh to another family member, Gray Carroll. Later, in 1870, the property was sold to Samuel P. Bayly. Over the years, many different families owned Ashleigh.

In 1929, Dr. Edmund Horgan bought the house. He made some special changes to it. Dr. Horgan added beautiful pine wood panels to one of the rooms. These panels were very special because they had been removed from the White House during a renovation project.

How Ashleigh Looks

Ashleigh is a one-story house with a main section and two wings on either side. The house is built from stone, which is covered with a smooth finish called stucco.

On the front of the house, there is a grand porch. It has columns in the Greek Doric order style. When you enter, you step into a long hall. Behind this hall is a main living room, called a parlor.

The house also has a lovely garden. It features a well-known boxwood hedge. This is a type of shrub often used to create neat, green borders in gardens.

A Special Historic Place

Because of its unique architecture and history, Ashleigh is recognized as an important landmark. On August 14, 1973, Ashleigh was officially placed on the National Register of Historic Places. This is a list of places in the United States that are considered important to our country's history and culture. Being on this list helps protect the house and its history for future generations.
