Astrea is a town and a "municipality" (like a county or district) in northern Colombia. It is located in the Department of Cesar. Astrea is a place where many people live and work, especially in farming and raising animals.

The land in Astrea is part of something called the "Zambrano formation." This means the ground was formed a long time ago, during a period called the Neogene. The soil here is often a gray-greenish clay.

Astrea was founded by a farmer named Martín Mier Barbosa. He started the town in 1936. A group of farmers from the Magdalena Department came with him. They were looking for better places for their animals to graze.

Astrea Becomes a Municipality

In 1964, the Department of Cesar was created. At that time, Astrea was a "corregimiento" (a smaller administrative division) of Chimichagua. Later, on November 26, 1984, Astrea became its own municipality. This happened through a special rule called Ordinance 013 of 1984.
