The municipality of Astrea is located in the Department of Cesar. To the north, it shares a border with El Paso. To the northwest, it borders the Magdalena Department. South of Astrea is the municipality of Chiriguana.
How Big is Astrea?
Astrea covers an area of about 580 square kilometers. That's roughly 224 square miles. The weather in Astrea is usually warm. The average temperature throughout the year is around 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit).
Astrea's Unique Ground
The land in Astrea is part of something called the "Zambrano formation." This means the ground was formed a long time ago, during a period called the Neogene. The soil here is often a gray-greenish clay.
A Look at Astrea's Past
Astrea was founded by a farmer named Martín Mier Barbosa. He started the town in 1936. A group of farmers from the Magdalena Department came with him. They were looking for better places for their animals to graze.
Astrea Becomes a Municipality
In 1964, the Department of Cesar was created. At that time, Astrea was a "corregimiento" (a smaller administrative division) of Chimichagua. Later, on November 26, 1984, Astrea became its own municipality. This happened through a special rule called Ordinance 013 of 1984.
