Asunción Linares Rodríguez (born February 12, 1921 – died April 21, 2005) was an important Spanish scientist. She was a paleontologist, which means she studied fossils to learn about ancient life on Earth. She was known for her excellent teaching and research.
Asunción Linares earned her degree in Natural Sciences. She studied at the Complutense University of Madrid. In 1952, she completed her doctorate. Her main research was about trilobites found in Spain.
In 1961, she made history. She became a professor of Paleontology at the University of Granada. She was the first woman to get such a high position in a science department in Spain. She was also the second woman to become a full professor after the Spanish Civil War.
Asunción Linares helped many students. She guided them through their own doctoral studies. She also brought a new field of study to the University of Granada. This field was called Micropaleontology. It focuses on very tiny fossils.
From 1980 to 1981, she held another important role. She was the Vice Chancellor of academic organization at the University of Granada.
Awards and recognitions
Asunción Linares received several honors for her work.
- A public square in Granada is named after her. It is called Plaza de la Catedrática Asunción Linares.
- A nursery school in Granada also carries her name.
- She became an Honorary Member of the Spanish Paleontology Society.
Animals named after her
Some ancient creatures were named in her honor. This is a special way to recognize scientists.
- Lemdadella linaresae (named in 1978): This was a type of trilobite. Trilobites were ancient sea creatures with hard shells. This one lived in the Lower Cambrian period.
- Linaresia (named in 1968): This is a group of tiny sea organisms called foraminifera. They lived during the Cenozoic Era.
- Linaresites (named in 2012): This is a group of ammonites. Ammonites were ancient sea animals with spiral shells. They lived in the Middle Jurassic period.
