The Asón near Arredondo, Cantabria

The Asón River is an important and beautiful river located in northern Spain. It flows entirely through the region known as Cantabria. This river begins its journey high up in the mountains, specifically in the Collados del Asón Natural Park. After traveling for about 39 kilometers (around 24 miles), it reaches the Cantabrian Sea in the town of Colindres. Here, the Asón River helps form a very special area called the Santoña estuary.

The River's Journey

The Asón River starts its flow from a spring within the stunning Collados del Asón Natural Park. This park is known for its impressive landscapes, including tall mountains and deep valleys. As the river travels, it carves its way through the Cantabrian countryside, passing by small towns and green areas.

From Mountains to Sea

The river's path is relatively short, only about 39 kilometers (24 miles) long. Despite its length, it plays a vital role in the local environment. The water from the Asón River eventually mixes with the salty waters of the Cantabrian Sea. This meeting point creates a unique habitat known as an estuary.

The Santoña Estuary

When the Asón River reaches the sea near the town of Colindres, it forms the Santoña estuary. An estuary is a partly enclosed coastal body of water where fresh water from rivers mixes with salt water from the ocean.

A Special Natural Area

The Santoña estuary is not just any estuary; it is a very important natural area. It is recognized as a Special Protection Area (SPA), which means it is protected to help conserve its unique wildlife and habitats. This estuary is one of the most significant SPAs in northern Spain.

Why the Estuary is Important

The mix of fresh and salt water in the Santoña estuary creates a rich environment that supports many different kinds of plants and animals. It is especially important for many species of birds, which use the estuary as a resting and feeding stop during their long migrations. The mudflats and salt marshes within the estuary provide food and shelter for these birds, making it a vital place for nature conservation.
