Being a Grandmaster is the highest title a chess player can get. Atanas Kolev earned this title in 1993. His peak rating of 2604 points shows how strong his play was.
Coaching and Writing
Atanas Kolev was the coach for the Bulgarian women's national chess team from 2004 to 2006. He helped train some of the country's top female players.
He also loves to share his chess knowledge. He has written several popular chess books:
- He teamed up with another Bulgarian Grandmaster, Kiril Georgiev, to write The Sharpest Sicilian. This book is about a special chess opening called the Najdorf Variation.
- They updated this book in 2012, calling it The Sharpest Sicilian 2012.
- Atanas also worked with Macedonian Grandmaster Trajko Nedev on The Easiest Sicilian. This book teaches about another chess opening called the Sveshnikov Variation.
Amazing Tournament Wins
Atanas Kolev had a fantastic year in 2011, winning many tournaments:
- He won the 33rd Plovdiv Open.
- He shared first place at the Albena Open with another Grandmaster, Cheparinov.
- He won the 20th annual Midway Championship in Chicago.
- He also won the First Annual International Chess Festival in Detroit.
In 2011, he won five out of the six tournaments he played! By the end of that year, he had won or shared first place in 60 international chess tournaments. This is a huge achievement in his career!
