Atanas Kolev (Bulgarian: Атанас Колев) is a famous Bulgarian Grandmaster in chess. He was born on July 15, 1967. A Grandmaster is the highest title a chess player can achieve. His best rating was 2604 points in July 2012.
Atanas Kolev also worked as a coach. He coached the Bulgarian women's national chess team from 2004 to 2006.

The Sharpest Sicilian
He wrote The Sharpest Sicilian with another Bulgarian Grandmaster, Kiril Georgiev. This book is about a specific chess opening called the Najdorf Variation. It's a way to start a chess game. The first version of the book came out in 2007. Five years later, in October 2012, they released a completely new and updated version called The Sharpest Sicilian 2012.
The Easiest Sicilian
Atanas Kolev also co-authored The Easiest Sicilian. He wrote this book with Macedonian Grandmaster Trajko Nedev. This book focuses on another part of the Sicilian Defense, known as the Sveshnikov Variation. It was published in 2008.

2011 Tournament Success
In 2011, he won five out of the six tournaments he played.

- He shared first place with Grandmaster Cheparinov at the Albena Open 2011.
- He won the 20th annual Midway Championship in Chicago 2011.
- He also won the First Annual International Chess Festival in Detroit 2011.
