Atil (also spelled Átil) is a small town in the northwest part of Sonora, a state in Mexico. It is part of the Atil Municipality. The name "Atil" is thought to mean "Arrow Point" in the Pima language.
The total area of the municipality is about 400.43 square kilometers. In 2005, the municipality had a population of 734 people. Most of these, 699 people, lived in the main town of Atil. Nearby towns include Tubutama, Trincheras, Oquitoa, and Altar.
Atil was founded in 1687. This happened when a mission called Santa Teresa de Atil was started by a Jesuit missionary named Eusebio Kino. The first people to live there were Pima Alto or Nebome Indians. Before the mission, these groups often moved around instead of staying in one place. You can still see the ruins of Kino's mission today. Another Jesuit missionary, Jacobo Sedelmayer, helped build some of the structures.
