Atlanta is a small village located in Winn Parish, Louisiana, in the United States. In 2020, about 149 people lived there. It was officially made a village in 1907.

History of Atlanta

The first people to settle in Atlanta came from Georgia in the 1850s. They were pioneers looking for new places to live.

Atlanta has been hit by strong tornadoes several times.

  • On December 8, 1916, a tornado destroyed 35 homes and many other buildings. Two people died, and 15 were hurt.
  • Exactly one year later, on December 8, 1917, another tornado struck. It damaged churches, homes, and businesses. One child died, and two other people were injured. Both of these tornadoes were very strong.

In 1938, a 5.5-kilogram (12 lb) stone from a meteorite was found near Atlanta. A meteorite is a piece of rock from space that falls to Earth. This was one of only three meteorites ever found in Louisiana.

On November 29, 2010, Atlanta was hit by a very powerful tornado. This tornado completely destroyed a large house and badly damaged several others. It was one of the strongest tornadoes to hit Louisiana that year.

Education in Atlanta

Students in Atlanta attend schools that are part of the Winn Parish School Board district. They go to schools in Winnfield, which include Winnfield Primary School, Winnfield Middle School, and Winnfield Senior High School.

Atlanta used to have its own school, Atlanta High School, which taught students from kindergarten all the way through 12th grade. However, in July 2023, the school board decided to close Atlanta High School. The main reason for this decision was that it had the smallest number of students compared to other schools in the district. After the school closed, students from Atlanta were sent to schools in Winnfield.

The Winn Parish Library also has a branch located in Atlanta, called the Atlanta Library Branch.
