A New Purpose: Youth Recreation Center
In 2009, exciting plans were announced for the armory. It was going to get a big makeover! The goal was to turn it into a fun place for young people. This new center would be a youth recreation center.
The project received about $2.9 million in funding. This money came from different New Jersey government groups. The renovations changed the large drill floor into an indoor track and a soccer field. Other areas were made into offices, classrooms, and locker rooms for kids to use.
The Older Morris Guard Armory
Atlantic City also has another, even older armory. This one is called the Morris Guard Armory. It was built in 1887 by a group called the Morris Guards. They were a military and social club. The armory was named after Colonel Daniel Morris, a wealthy businessman and Civil War veteran who helped pay for the building.
For many years, this armory was a main entertainment spot in the city. This was before the much larger Convention Center was built. In November 2014, there were plans to change this historic building for new uses.
