Atomizer Geyser is a special kind of geyser found in Yellowstone National Park in the United States. It's located in the Upper Geyser Basin, which is near the famous Old Faithful geyser. Atomizer Geyser is part of a group of geysers called the Cascade Group. This group also includes another geyser named Artemisia Geyser.

The name "Atomizer" comes from the way it erupts. During its biggest eruptions, it shoots out a very fine mist. This mist looks a lot like the spray from an atomizer, which is a device that turns liquid into a fine spray.

What Makes Atomizer Geyser Unique?

Atomizer Geyser has two cone-shaped mounds. Each cone is about 3 feet (1 meter) tall.

  • One cone is where the water shoots out, like a powerful jet.
  • The other cone is special because it sprays that fine mist during the larger eruptions. This mist is what gave the geyser its name!

How Atomizer Geyser Erupts

Atomizer Geyser erupts in a series of events. It usually has a few smaller eruptions followed by one big eruption.

Minor Eruptions

  • These eruptions are shorter, lasting about one minute.
  • The water can shoot up to 30 feet (9 meters) high.
  • There are usually three to five minor eruptions in a series.

Major Eruptions

  • These are the biggest and most exciting eruptions.
  • They last much longer, from 8 to 10 minutes.
  • The water can reach an amazing height of 40 to 50 feet (12 to 15 meters)!
  • After the water shoots out, there's a phase where a lot of steam comes out.

The Eruption Cycle

Atomizer Geyser follows a specific pattern before it erupts.

  • First, its water pool overflows every few minutes. This can last for two to four hours.
  • Then, the first minor eruption happens.
  • After that, six to eight more minor eruptions occur, usually about an hour apart.
  • The big major eruption starts between 15 minutes and 1½ hours after the last minor eruption.
  • Once a major eruption finishes, it takes about six hours for the geyser's water pool to fill up again.
