Exploring Attleborough Falls
Attleborough Falls is in the middle of North Attleborough. This town is in Bristol County. It's located northeast of Pawtucket, Rhode Island. Long ago, this area was mostly farms. But things started to change in the early 1800s.
How the Area Grew
Factories began to pop up in Attleborough Falls. The main business was making jewelry. These factories were built on the north side of the Ten Mile River. People who worked in these factories needed places to live. So, starting in the 1850s, homes were built south of the river. This area became a neighborhood for factory workers. Later, public transportation also helped the area grow.
What You'll See There
The historic district has a shape like a triangle. The Ten Mile River forms its northern edge. Mount Hope Street is on the west side. Towne Street forms the southeast boundary. These streets have been there since the area was rural.
Old Farmhouses and Early Homes
A few old farmhouses are still standing. They were built before the factories arrived. Two of these houses date back to about 1790. They are in the Federal style.
Homes from the 1850s
Mount Hope Street has many homes from the 1850s. These houses show the Greek Revival and Italianate styles. They were some of the first homes built for factory workers.
Victorian Houses
Later, from the 1870s to the 1890s, many Victorian houses were added. These homes show different styles of the time. Some are simple, while others are very fancy.
Famous Homes in the District
One of the most beautiful homes belongs to B. S. Freeman. He owned a jewelry factory. His house at 370 Mount Hope Street was built around 1890. It's a grand Queen Anne house. Another factory owner, John F. Sturdy, lived at 110 Towne Street. His large house was built around 1870. It is in the Second Empire style.
