Au Gres (pronounced "AW gray") is a small city in Arenac County, Michigan. In 2020, about 945 people lived there.

A Look Back: The History of Au Gres

The name "Au Gres" comes from French explorers. They called the area "Point Au Grès." The word grès means "gritty stone" or "sandstone." This is how the nearby river and the town got their names.

The first people to settle here temporarily were workers in 1862. They were building a road called the Saginaw–Au Sable State Road. The first person to live here permanently was John Edward Bradley. He built the Bradley House in 1866.

A post office was set up in Au Gres on August 8, 1867. John Edward Bradley was the first postmaster. Au Gres officially became a city in 1905.
