The brown ball frog (scientific name: Aubria subsigillata) is a type of frog found in parts of Africa. It is also known as the West African brown frog. These frogs belong to a group of animals called the Pyxicephalidae family.

You can find these frogs in different areas of Africa. Their homes stretch from southern Guinea through Liberia and Ivory Coast. They also live from Nigeria to southern Cameroon, and from Equatorial Guinea to Gabon. However, scientists sometimes have different ideas about where exactly this species lives. For example, some believe it only lives in Cameroon and areas further south.

About the Brown Ball Frog

What's in a Name?

The scientific name subsigillata has a special meaning. It comes from two Latin words. Sub means "under," and sigillatus means "decorated with small marks." This name describes the frog's belly. It has small speckles or marks on its underside.

How Does it Look?

The brown ball frog is a large and strong-looking frog. Males are usually about 6.5 to 8.8 centimeters (2.5 to 3.5 inches) long. Females are a bit bigger, measuring about 7.6 to 9.5 centimeters (3 to 3.7 inches) long. Both males and females look quite similar in other ways.

Their backs are usually brown. Their undersides are speckled white over a brown background. Older frogs might have more white on their bellies. They have a small ear drum, called a tympanum, which you can see on the side of their head.

Where Does it Live?

Brown ball frogs like to live in wet places. Their natural homes include swamps. They also live along small streams in rainforests. You can find them in areas with many trees, like gallery forests. They can even live in places where forests have been changed by farming.

This frog is quite good at adapting to different environments. It can live in many protected areas. Scientists believe it is not facing any major threats right now.
